Tower Pressure Cooker

Tower 4 litre Pressure Cooker

We have the Tower 4 litre pressure cooker and have been thoroughly impressed by it! Initially I bought it purely so I would have the option to properly seal jars of food for long term non-refrigerated storage and this model had been recommended as one of the few available in the UK that go up to the required pressure. It comes complete with a steamer tray for cooking veg which also doubles as the rack for jars to stand on which is handy. To date however I’ve not yet used it for canning but it has already proven itself invaluable for making soup, casseroles and stews in record time therefore saving our precious bottled gas. The most important ingredient for a tasty stew is time, but as that’s in short supply for most people these days it’s great to have some help!

Don’t be scared of the idea of the pressure, I know I was a little unsure of it at first. Yes they can be dangerous if used incorrectly, like many kitchen appliances! However not only does it have a safety valve which pops up if the pressure gets too much, it also has a safety lock on the handle so you (or inquisitive little hands) can’t open it until the pressure inside drops to a safe level.

There are a number of sizes to choose from so you can choose the one that's best for you, I went with the 4 litre as it was the smallest available that could still hold a few jars inside. Bear in mind that you should only really fill it to around halfway to two thirds full to allow for expansion and to stop splatters of food from blocking the steam vent so you don’t get 4 whole litres of stew from a 4 litre cooker. For us two that’s plenty big enough and a stew in ours generally feeds us both for two days which is great because I also get a day off from cooking!

We live neither on or off-grid, rather somewhere in between, and are not the first and I dare say not the last to choose this way of life... read more>>
