Biodegradable/Recycled Food Wrap

By now we all know the problems created by plastic but these days it doesn't have to be that way! Plastic can be made from other sources like shellfish, hemp and other plant starches, or a simple additive can now be included to bags and films which allows the material to break down once in land fill conditions (not to be confused with the oxo-biodegradable plastics), meaning that your sandwiches are very safe - unless you bury them in the ground! ;) If you don't want to completely switch to reusable food wraps, and I do appreciate the convenience of disposable bags, then you can now simply choose biodegradable versions.

I'm a firm believer that if we want to see changes in this world then we must take the steps to make it better ourselves. I consider every pound I spend to be a vote on the market, every penny spent is analysed by marketing experts who look for patterns and try to guess what us consumers want to buy. Companies then stock the products they recommend. Yes I could buy cheaper versions, of almost everything, but at what cost overall? Every time I choose a more ethical version of something, I have made a decision that reaches much further than where my sandwich bag ends up which is something to be proud of! In time, like anything with good demand, the prices for these new materials will come down too.

See below for some foil and bags to get you started and links to where they are available from. Have you seen any in the supermarkets yet? We'd love to know where to help spread the word, please leave a comment below!

We live neither on or off-grid, rather somewhere in between, and are not the first and I dare say not the last to choose this way of life... read more>>
