Mini Twin Tub Camping Washing Machine

Mini Twin Tub Camping Washing Machine

We knew before we moved into Waki that we were going to need a good, yet portable washing machine. Yes laundrettes exist and most camp sites have a washing room with machines to use, however the ones we've found have cost between £4-£5 per wash excluding the cost of detergents! The alternative is to hand wash our clothes as I do with our real napkins (I do admit to employing other more unusual tricks like bringing my 'delicates' into the shower with me...!) but washing by hand is seriously tough on the hands let alone a messy process.

This little electric twin tub was just the ticket - it's light weight and sturdy, low power, and does the job well being also compact enough to fit in our cupboard (though we did buy it before we built that particular cupboard so made sure it would fit!).

It's 240v so you need to be on electric hook-up or have an inverter to use it but it works on a mere 160 watts so won't go overloading anything in a hurry. You do need to have a good supply of water near by as it uses a surprising amount! Our model only has a recommended capacity of 1.5kg so a wash bag needs to be split into two cycles and really heavy fabrics like thick mens jeans may need to go in alone.

Pour the water and detergent straight in the top onto your clothes mixing hot and cold yourself to get the temperature you want. The first time I used ours I was so fixated on how to work it that I actually forgot to add any hot water at all, but luckily it still cleaned everything! To empty the water, aim the drain hose into a bucket or waste water bottle and turn the dial to drain, it does work via gravity alone so you need to raise the machine higher than the bucket. Pour more clean water and fabric softener in with your washed clothes and run it again for a few minutes to rinse. Of course we advocate using water resources and detergents sparingly so if you can, use the rinse water for the next batch of washing! ;D

It's very simple to use with a gentle or normal wash setting and a simple twist timer to start which goes up to 15 minutes. I've found so far that 15 minutes is plenty long enough overall, however, considering it doesn't tumble them over each other like a conventional washing machine I do like to stop halfway to rearrange the clothes so they wash evenly.

To operate the spinner simply turn the spin timer and it whizzes away up to an impressive 1350rpm. The spinner capacity is less than that of the washing tub so It does require a little careful positioning of the wet clothes to spin smoothly, and sometimes a couple of attempts to get it right, but I suppose that's the price you pay for a light-weight machine!

A good fast spin function is essential for clothes washing whether camping in a tent, caravan or motor home. It means that your clothes will dry much faster and release less moisture into the air whilst they do so which will help reduce condensation problems inside and I'm very pleased with the results of this little machine!

We purchased our camping twin tub washing machine over 2 years ago for around £80, unfortunately Amazon are currently showing the item as unavailable >>

I have seen our model with other retailers since, and they still pop up on e-bay every now and then so it's worth checking around if you want the very same machine as ours.
