We always seem to get asked the same questions about living somewhat off grid in a motor home, to which the answers seem to spark a dozen more questions! So (to give our voices a rest!) here's the answers to our most frequently asked questions...

Homesteading - without land!

Our ancient ancestors lived a nomadic lifestyle roaming the wilds of Britain before it even had a name, and our more recent ancestors knew exactly how to use every part of the land and it's produce. At The Waki Way we figure that the term 'homesteading' in its simplest definition is about making the most of what you have worked hard for, so you can continue to enjoy it throughout the other seasons and leaner times. And since home is where the heart is, we also figure that the term can be applied to wherever you find yourself living and working - no farm land required!

To bring a bit of the old ways into your modern life, combine growing or foraging your own fruit and vegetables (even if the foraging is done at a market stall), preserving it yourself, and add some thrifty DIY and upcycling projects and you're pretty much there with the homesteading frame of mind! Living in Waki may mean we don't have any land to farm, apart from a few pots around 'base camp', but like our ancestors we do have access to an endlessly changing wild landscape... who says you can't have a 'homesteading' mentality whilst living in a motor home? ;)

See below for our simple recipes and guides for how to pickle, dry, preserve and generally make the most of your farm shop or foraged finds - wherever you are and whatever you live in!

About us:

My name is Sarah and in 2011 my husband Ryan and I decided to buy and re-fit an old motor home - we named it Waki and now live in it full time in the UK!

We live neither on or off-grid, rather somewhere in between, and are not the first and I dare say not the last to choose this way of life... read more>>
